So let’s face it, managing compliance sucks. It’s complicated, it’s so hard to keep organized, and it requires a ton of expertise in order to survive the entire process. Welcome to Compliance Unfiltered, a podcast dedicated to making compliance suck less.
Now, here’s your host, Todd Coshow, with Adam Goslin.
Well, welcome in to another edition of Compliance Unfiltered. I’m Todd Coshow alongside a man who is literally jumping with compliance joy right now, Adam Goslin. Adam, how the heck are you? I’m doing fabulous today. How about yourself? Man, I can’t complain. I can’t complain at all. We’re excited over here at TCT. It’s been a minute since TCT was in person in a PCI Conference, and that’s going to change soon. But tell me, why has it been so long, Adam? Well, back in 2019, we attended the North America Community Meeting. It was in Vancouver, and oh my God, that was an adventure. I’m not sure if I told you about the challenge. We had a booth and everything there. I’m not sure if I told you the challenges of that, but we were trying to ship all the booth materials over. it got stuck in Customs. We had to rent a van in Canada, go drive across the border into the US, into Washington, and try to pick up all the booth materials, then get them back over the border. They wouldn’t allow us to come over, the commuter side because we had all the booth materials, it was like we had to go with the cargo side of the truck scope. Oh my gosh. Oh, dude. It was hairy. But the Conference was really, really cool, and all that fun stuff. But then came COVID in 2020, and so the PCI Conference went virtual for that year. And, the whole notion of a virtual conference was brand new, I was like, man, we’re going to pass for this year, and we’ll see what happens come 2021, because maybe we’ll get back in person. And of course, 2021 came around, and they were doing the virtual conference now for the second year in 2021 still due to COVID. And, so we ended up participating in that virtual conference. We were hoping that any of the kinks have been worked out in general with virtual conferences. Organizations have now had better part of about a year to get that under their belt and whatnot. During that conference, we were selected to perform a tech demo as part of the 2021 conference. So, it was fun going in and doing the virtual conference in 2021. We were pretty honored we got selected for the, tech summit. So, that was all cool. But that’s the reason why it’s been a while since we’ve been in person. Certainly.
Now, I guess, why, beyond the obvious, the excitement for the 2022 North America Community Meeting that’s coming up? Well, bar none we’re finally going to be able to go back being live, which is super cool. Number one. Number two, I get to go back to my roots a little bit, I was born in Canada. So this year’s meeting happens to be in in Toronto. So, Great city Toronto. Yeah, yeah, it’s good, that’s good times. But now we’re going to go up to Toronto, in person. It was probably one of the coolest parts about the pine for back in the 2019 days when we were actually in person is, that it’s great to see existing friends that we’ve got in the industry, seeing them face to face, being able to meet with folks that in today’s day and age, with all of the Zoom meetings and Go To Meetings, and Teams Meetings, and whatnot, you lose a certain amount of communication capability, connection, etc. It’s harder to build solid relationships when everything’s arm’s length through a computer screen. And so, it’s just such a stark difference to just be able to sit down and really see them and hang out and all that fun stuff.
So seeing everybody face to face again, that’s going to be awesome. And then, in 2019, 2019 was actually interesting because my wife used to run trade shows for a company for a couple of decades. And at the organization she was doing it for, they would do eight to 12 different shows a year. And she managed that process for about two decades. And when we went to the 2019 conference, she came along, was helping man the booth for us. And, she said, basically, she’s never seen an organization as well received as TCT was in 2019. So, certainly looking forward to getting back in person, being able to meet a new group of people and whatnot. My guess is, especially since the last time was in Canada, on the west coast, but now it’s Canada on the east coast, I’m guessing there’s probably going to be a pretty, broadly different group of people that come and show up. So it’s always awesome being able to talk to new people, and get to know them, and what their needs are, being able to do that in person, it’s a huge difference maker, if you will.
Absolutely. Well, for the conference itself, Adam, what types of sessions will they have for, I mean, learning? Well, this year in particular, is the launch of making available PCI DSS version 4.0. So with that coming out, there’s a lot to learn in that arena. They’re going to have all sorts of different sessions explaining different pieces and elements, and things along those lines to the conference attendees. So I can imagine there’ll be a pretty high level of interest in just everybody getting their arms around the PCI v4 arena. So, that piece is going to be huge as well. It’s interesting, they do a really good job even when we’ve got major new versions coming out. They do a really good job with not making it all about the new version right. They take different topics and speakers that are in the industry and, get them to share their experience and insight with the participants. So, certainly there’ll be a series of sessions where folks will get an opportunity to learn some new things, from some new folks. And in addition, the banking industry has some has some changes which are coming within numbers in the banking realm, and so there’s going to be some ripple impacts to participants that are going to be at the Conference. So, we’ll get to learn a little bit more about some of those changes over in the banking industry side, because they’re so closely aligned to folks that are in the card holder arena. Many of them are dabbling into the ACH realm, so it’ll be interesting to see some of those, and learn a little bit more about the changes that happen there.
Absolutely. So I understand there’s some exciting news? TCT will be able to do a tech demo this year, similar to the one they did in the virtual conference is that right? Yeah that’s super exciting news. When we did the tech demo, so the way it works with the tech demos is, you’ve got to basically create a submission, send it in, they’ll go in and look at the various submissions, and select the organizations they want to participate in that tech demo. TCT was selected again this year, which is freaking great, I’m really excited to see how it plays out, because this will be our first opportunity to participate in the tech demo while actually being live.
So yeah, no pressure on your shoulders, Todd, but I know that we’ve got you and John Dotson, our Product Manager, Head of Product, if you will, is going to be doing the presentation, and a live overview of the TCT Portal. So that’s going to be good. I’m looking forward to seeing that play out as well. Just really having people be able to see it, see it happening live. I think it’s a lot different of an experience than when in the booth, in the booth we’ll have a TV up with a demo going, but it’s a lot different when we can press buttons, answer questions, and things along those lines. So that’s going to be really, really cool.
Part of the biggest challenge, I guess one of the things that I, didn’t anticipate being as challenging as it has been since I started TCT, is just getting the word out there that we exist. It’s funny when we talk to people about what we do, and why we do it, their general reaction is, wow, I wish I’d known about this type of thing. And so being able to get out there, doing the tech demo, being able to share our platform with others. The mission for TCT is, has, remains, will always remain the cause of helping others, primarily those that are in the compliance space, without having to deal with all of the compliance management nightmares. It’s always fun when we can get out there, and show them what we have. it works, things along those lines, that’s all fun stuff that we can go in and do. And I like seeing the reactions when the light bulbs start going on about what we’ve got here, it’s good, it’s actually really cool.
Indeed. What, what else do we have going on at the conference this year? So the Conference itself, they’re also going to have several networking events, the for the PCI council provides as part of the conference itself. So there’ll be certain networking events, where people can come and join in. They also have points in the schedule where they’ve incorporated a combination of networking, the ability for people to go in and just do networking, talk to each other, get a break, whatever. But at those times, they also encourage the participants to go in, and they have what they call a vendor showcase. In effect, it’s a gigantic room with a bunch of booths, different vendors, that have business offerings that are either directly related to PCI or cardholder data, or indirectly help to support some of the requirements that companies end up having to go through. It’s actually really interesting, the vendors showcase, just because for the participants, they get to go and walk around and see some of the new faces, or somebody they maybe didn’t know about out in the space. And there’s all sorts of different types of organizations. So typically, the council itself has a place you can go walk up to and talk to them. The card brands, they’re there as well. You’ve got everything from assessors, consulting houses, and day by day IT companies. I’m going to call it point solutions for different technical elements, that you would use to fulfill your PCI compliance. So the logging vendors, and AV vendors, and that type of thing as well as the tools for managing engagements, and doing engagement, overall engagement management for both organizations that are assessors and auditors in the space, as well as for companies that are just going through compliance, and are tired of dealing with their manual process that they have in place today.
So at the vendor showcase, TCT will have a booth again this year. I’m excited about that because, the last go around when I did this, I did it just because it was our inaugural, one of our earlier booth experiences. It was my wife and I that ended up manning the booth, and that made it tough because, I was the one who needed to answer the questions and she was helping like blazes. But this year, I’ll be there again, we’ll also have you there Todd as Head of business development, and we’re going to have John Dotson, our Head of Product there as well. So, all three of us in the freaking booth, dude, this is going to be awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, because, I had people literally, they couldn’t get up to have a conversation. We’ll have enough presence there this year that, we should be able to have great conversations with all of the folks that come by, and we’re really looking forward to chatting with both our old friends and our new.
Absolutely. And I think that’s a great segue into, chatting a little bit more about what else is happening that week. Well, for the first time ever, TCT is going to co-sponsor a couple of evening events during the conference week on Wednesday evening. So, we’re going to co-sponsor one event with Online Business Systems, and another event with RSI. So that’s going to be super cool. We’ll divide forces and go conquer, but that’ll allow us to have some even more in-depth conversations with folks, different of us will go to each of those events. So for anybody that’s actually attending the PCI Conference, what they can do is, they can come by our booth, the internal TCT marketing crew did a fricking stellar job of designing this little postcard with a QR code on it. So the attendees will be able to go in, grab that, be able to snap a QR code, our code, and get to a landing page that we’ve got. It’s got the information on the events. Certainly, depending on who’s going and what they’re wanting to talk about, they can talk to us in the booth, and figure out which of the two events is going to be a good one to go head to. But yeah, we’d love to see the conference attendees coming by, stopping by the events, both the Online Business Systems and RSI crews, they’re both super cool. So it’ll be really neat to be doing that with those groups.
So yeah, we’d love to have folks come by, stop by our booth. We can explain more about the evening events with those great customers at TCT. Absolutely. If you are also listening to this and you would like some more information, check the episode description on whatever player you’re listening to this on. We’ll drop a link there for some more info.
Parting parts or I don’t know, more shots. I feel like I’m listening to a song. So yeah, maybe at the evening events right at the end. You never know. We’re not starting that parade early. But anyway, honestly, I’m super, super excited about being able to get out there, talk with folks about security, compliance, and certainly the ongoing driver for TCT has been furthering that mission of helping others. I’m eagerly anticipating the point at which, we’re able to extend beyond the compliance management piece and start getting into some of the other things on our mission roadmap. And, I remain eternally hopeful that, that starts to come together, the latter part of 22 and 23. I guess we’ll see. But no, I’m just seriously looking forward to folks being out there, talking with them in person. Oh my gosh, it’s going to be awesome. Outstanding.
And that is the good stuff. Well, that’s all the time we have for this episode of Compliance Unfiltered. I’m Todd Coshow. And I’m Adam Goslin. Hope we helped to get you fired up to make your compliance suck less.
