So let’s face it, managing compliance sucks. It’s complicated, it’s so hard to keep organized, and it requires a ton of expertise in order to survive the entire process. Welcome to Compliance Unfiltered, a podcast dedicated to making compliance suck less. Now, here’s your host, Todd Coshow, with Adam Goslin.
Well, welcome in to another edition of Compliance Unfiltered. I’m Todd Coshow alongside the creams of your compliance Oreo, Mr. Adam Goslin. How the heck are you, sir? I’m doing good, Todd. I want yourself. And I can’t complain, and the illustrious world of Rick James, it’s a celebration, bitches. It is episode 100, Adam. I could not be more excited. Can you believe we’ve made it this far? Hey, will you look at us? Yeah, it’s actually surprising how quickly it’s gone by. So it was a little bit awkward in the beginning, but we kind of got into the groove. I don’t know about you. I went back. I was listening to some of our earliest episodes. And yeah, I think we’ve come a little, I think you’ve come a little ways since then, but it’s just been cool having a forum to share insights about things that are going on in the security and compliance arena, and just glad to have made it to the big 100 episodes. I think in the grand scheme of things, it’s a fairly decent accomplishment. There are not many security and compliance podcasts that have made it this far. So I feel like we’re in a select group. I look at this journey as something that has provided both knowledge and inspiration to a lot of people and to us in many areas along the way as well.
Well, Adam, why don’t you share with some of the folks some of the funny challenges that we’ve run into along the way. Well, and this is kind of reflecting back, right? And you jump in with some of yours too, but I’ll kind of kick it off. Certainly for anybody that’s listened for any appreciable period of time, us trying to record podcasts while dealing with what I call the motion alerts on all sides has been entertaining. It’s funny, there’s just, there’s no, There’s no controlling what happens and when, and what I’ve discovered is the propensity for someone to deliver something and ring the doorbell, which, of course, invokes all hell breaking loose over here. You know, oh my God, we’re under attack! You know, reactions from my three motion alerts. You know, certainly learning to turn the volume up on the cell phone, lock up the squeaky chair.
You know, what about something on your head? Well, I mean, there’s been a few, but, you know, definitely one of the things that you always say in, you know, your compliance landscape meetings with folks is you list off the hit by the bus people, as you call them, like, what would happen within the organization if SY and Z people got hit by a bus, let’s make sure we have a contingency plan for them. And then we actually had a member of the TCT staff, get hit by a freaking bus! Yeah, I did mention on several occasions that he really didn’t need to go that far, but I admired his spirit. But, you know, the other thing that’s funny is- Well, to be fair, before we move on from that, he is doing a lot better, just for physical therapy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. Actually, it was funny, it was funny. I was giving him crap because we were having a chitchat and he was saying something about, you know, how do you protect people from getting hit by the bus?
And I was all going into it completely serious. You know, and I basically, I said, well, all you gotta do is have the guy named, fill in the blank, I’m not gonna name, but, you know, have the guy named fill in the blank, you know, constantly with like a marshmallow suit on.
So if they get anywhere near a bus, then, you know, there’s some measure of protection that surrounds them all times type of thing. So, you know, that was kind of fun, kind of fun and on him a little bit. But, you know, the other thing I was thinking about is that, you know, as we’re going through and we’re doing the recordings, you know, we talked about the, you know, the likelihood someone’s going to deliver something and ring the doorbell. Well, you know, similarly, the likelihood that the lawn people show up and start, you know, just start, you know, mowing right outside the window, weed whipping the walk right outside, you know, right outside the office. It is that moment in time where you, you, they have to blow the leaves. They cannot do anything more with their life than blow the leaves in that moment. Yes, no, I agree. And similarly, the unexpected entrances on the episodes from the little people we have in our lives, from those parents out there, I’ve got, you know, three small ones and they, despite being aware that daddy’s on a podcast, just have to ask me a question about crackers right now.
Listen, you know, there’s priorities in this life and then there’s their priorities. Okay. Long as you’ve got that straight, everything’s going to be okay. Well, and not the least of which is, you know, right in the midst of everything that we’ve been doing, you know, we, oh, I don’t know, had to deal with that after the pandemic as well. So yeah, it’s been the last, the last little while has been, it’s had its, we’ll call it its fair share of entertainment and challenges.
Now, what cool things have happened related to the pod along the way? Well, you know, without a doubt, you know, us being able to go to events, meeting people, where they recognize us because of, you know, because of the podcast, that was actually entertaining as how we’ve had, we’ve had a particular lady that is a regular pod listener that came up to meet us at one of the shows that we were at. you know and was, was expounding about just how cool it was just being able to hear, hear our voices but we were right there you know type of thing and no it’s, it’s been it’s been fun you know been fun being able to meet people that recognize us you know receiving a request from you know from different people and topics they’d love us to cover being able to facilitate you know handling those you know listeners to the pod that you know recommend you know episodes to other people and have helped to you know kind of help to, to spread the word you know I’ve often said one of the biggest challenges of you know kind of stepping out into you know into the business landscape you know one of the biggest challenges it honestly is just having people know you exist so you know super appreciative you know, of the various people that have, you know, kind of helped spread the word and share the love and all that fun stuff. Indeed. Now, speaking of people, what about the people we’d like to thank? Well, you know, most certainly, you know, most certainly there’s a, you know, there’s certain key people that have played a, you know, played a good part in the, you know, in the pod and its involvement, you know, and whatnot. You know, I’ll start off with, you know, certainly John Dotson, our head of product. He, you know, he has been, he’s been involved in several episodes and assisting us with, you know, kind of discussion topics and planning and things along those lines. So, you know, he’s played a big part, our friends over at, over at OBS. Excuse me. Our friends over at OBS, I’ve had them on, you know, them on for episodes. They’ve, they have always been, you know, strong supporters of TCT.
The team over at, over at Confide, you know, go, I need the baton for a minute, Todd. Yeah, you’ve had a lot of interaction with those guys. Indeed. We love the folks at Confide. Big shout to Paul and Stuart, Martin, and the entire team, Nicole over there as well.
Just across the board, across multiple continents. Confide has been a huge supporter of TCT and of compliance and filters, and we couldn’t be more thankful for them and for them to listen and continue to, to give feedback when we see them. Yeah. Well, and, you know, back to, you know, some of your comments about, about Confide really remind me a lot of, you know, a lot, both Confide and OBS have been freaking great. You know, online business systems. I’m not sure if I’ve said this on the pod before, but OBS was literally the very first company to sign paper for the TCT portal back in the day. And we started the relationship out with the notion that, hey, we’re gonna take care of you. And they’ve been big fans. I often say that if I wanna have somebody get whipped to death with cheerleading pom poms, all I have to do is introduce them to Sherry Collis and Steve Levinson over at Online Business Systems. And they carry the water, if you will. But the confide team has similarly been big fans, big cheerleaders, all that fun stuff. Certainly I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank literally everybody at TCT. you know, I just, I like to tell people, I said, hey, you know, I’m just a dumb ass that started this.
You know, the reality is, is that the team is the group that really carries far more water than I ever could, you know, and it’s definitely a team effort. You know, for me personally, I’m just thankful that I had that opportunity back in the day to get forced to put my toe into the security and compliance space to have to go and figure out that very first engagement. You know, you think about it, you know, Todd, it was really the start of, you know, the start of a career. You know, if I go back and I look back on it and, and none of, none of what we’ve done, where we’ve gotten to, etc, would have even happened had I not, you know, had I not had that. So yeah, yeah
And then finally, you know, the one, the one group that I, that I want to make sure that I take the opportunity to thank. And that is really the, you know, the family members of those at TCT. You know, the reality is, is that, you know, doing this isn’t, doing this isn’t easy. It does take a team effort. It takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears, you know, from, from all of the members of the team.
And, you know, really the family members of those with TCT are the ones that get to, get to put up with all the TCT shenanigans. So, you know, always thankful for, you know, for their, for their patients with us as we’ve done what we’ve done.
Indeed. Now, what are some of the popular topics over the course, the last hundred episodes? Well, what I found interesting is we actually went and took a look back at, at, you know, different topics and whatnot. What I found as a general rule is that, you know, we’ve covered you know, both extremely technical topics from a security and compliance perspective. We’ve also covered, I don’t know, we’ll call it the softer side or the philosophical side or non-technical side, if you will, of security and compliance. And what was interesting as a common thread is the popularity of the non-technical ones. So some of the examples of some of the more popular topics. We had episode 50, which was ways of dealing with internal compliance resistance when your internal team is really not exactly on board with heading down the security and compliance path. Different ways to be able to deal with that resistance.
episode 65, where we were talking about gaining next level performance from your compliance engagements. Episode 42, the little things when it comes to compliance management and managing compliance. And then there was also episode 46, why it’s important to care about overall security. One of the things that we’ve tried to do over the course of this pod is to mix in different topics that people would find interesting. And certainly one of the objectives that I had for this particular mechanism was to be able to have a forum where people could hear topics that they enjoyed and then be able to use those to introduce other people too. So as an example, some of those topics that I was just talking about, why is it important to care about overall security? It’s frustrating when you’re working in an organization and they really don’t get it. They don’t understand it. They don’t relate to the importance of taking security and compliance seriously because, well, we’ve never, finger our coats, had a problem. So why am I going to waste my time here? It’s tough road to be able to deal with. So it’s been fun looking at the topics that are popular and seeing that people have obviously introduced that topic in our pod to others through some of those topics that they find relatable. I just think it’s super cool. I do too. I do too.
Parting shots and thoughts for the folks on episode 100, Adam. Well, I’ll tell you. you what I’ll let you I’ll let you kick it off and I will I will bring up the rear well first thing that in this moment that I want to do is say thank you to the listeners truly above and beyond all the folks that you know have gone into helping make a hundred episodes none of this would be possible if it weren’t for the folks within the space they find value in what we do and so I want to spend this time and just say thank you from the bottom of our heart for sticking with us through however many of these hundred episodes that you’ve heard hundred percent agreed we look forward to to sharing more with you come in the coming days and weeks Adam excuse me suck at this dang lingering frickin cough it’s been I’m not joking it’s been three-something weeks it’s been crazy anyway you know it’s um you know, as we kind of look at, you know, we’ve made it to 100, we’re going to keep the party moving. You know, we’ll have some fun topics coming up. You know, we’ll, you know, we will, you know, be looking at getting some more guests, you know, into the mix. We’ve explored, possibly, you know, getting a video component of this as well. So, you know, there’s a lot of different things that we can go in, kind of go in and do with it. You know, what, from my side, you know, what I’m, what I’m really hopeful, you know, for the, you know, for the listener is that, you know, that they find this wealth of knowledge helpful. Continue recommending episodes to people that you know. You know, certainly, as you sit and you think about folks in the, in the security and compliance space, you know, we’ve attempted to cover a range of topics that effectively would be of interest to damn near anybody. You know, that even has the slightest notion of being interested in security and compliance. You know, and that’s kind of the way that we’ve, that we’ve broached and approached the topic. So, you know, certainly, you know, take a, take a fresh look through the, you know, through the compendium list. You know, throw a couple episodes out of people that you know. Continue helping to, to, to spread the word. You know, and certainly, for those listeners, please continue to send in, you know, any ideas that you’ve got, of things you’d like to have covered, you know, specific topics, etc. It’s, it’s the one thing that, you know, that a lot of folks, you know, that they learn as they, as they start to talk to us is that, you know, we know a ton of people in this space. So, even if we aren’t necessarily experts, you know, Garing frickin’ to you. We know somebody that is. So, you know, if there’s something of interest, go ahead and fire it over. Would, we love getting the, you know, getting the ideas, sharing knowledge. and kind of helping those in the security and compliance space. That’s kind of why we decided to go down this road in the first place.
Indeed. And that right there for the 100th time is the good stuff. Well, that’s all the time we have for this episode of Compliance Unfiltered. I’m Todd Coshow. And I’m Adam Goslin. Hope we helped to get you fired up to make your compliance suck less.
